Veronika Voloshyna, Ádám Szokolay (piano)

The matinee concert will feature two young talents: Veronika Voloshyna, a Ukrainian pianist living in Germany, and Ádám Szokolay, a renowned Hungarian pianist. The program includes pieces for piano duo, but the artists will also perform solo, each playing a movement from Ravel’s Miroirs cycle. In this composition, Ravel explicitly broke with his previous style, replacing the rich, impressionistic soundscape that had become his trademark with a sombre, descriptive mode of expression. Sorrowful Birds, for example, depicts birds dozing on branches parched by the heat in a dark forest. Mother Goose series strikes a more cheerful, fairy-tale tone, and the concert concludes with two four-hand pieces by Ferenc Liszt, the namesake of our museum. When Liszt premiered his good friend Berlioz’s opera Benvenuto Cellini in Weimar, he published a piano duet transcription — the Pope’s Blessing and Cellini’s Oath — to improve the work’s popularity. The matinee concert will conclude with the brilliant final movement of the four-hand arrangement of the orchestral version of the Nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, the Pesther Carneval.
