Featuring: students and teachers from the jazz and folk music department of the Bartók Conservatory
Alongside its classical foundations, the Liszt Academy has seen its Folk and Jazz Departments grow in prominence and prestige over recent years. With the number of applicants and the calibre of training consistently rising, this evening serves as a vibrant snapshot of that ongoing success.
The programme showcases both worlds in their own right, featuring standalone folk and jazz performances. However, the true heart of the concert lies in the collaborative sets. Students from both departments will take to the stage together in ensembles where the two musical languages don’t just sit side-by-side, but actively intertwine.
The faculty are deeply involved in this creative process; many of the tutors are equally at home in both genres, ensuring that this cross-pollination is not a one-off experiment, but a well-established tradition. This meeting of styles is no coincidence: jazz is famously rooted in folk music, and for over half a century, a vital branch of Hungarian jazz has drawn its improvisational and compositional strength directly from Hungarian folk traditions. This is folk and jazz – shared roots, reimagined for the here and now.
