The most exhilarating moments in folk music education occur when the skills honed in the practice room finally break free and take on a life of their own. This concert showcases two ensembles that found their unique voices within the creative workshops of the Liszt Academy’s Folk Music Department. The evening serves as a testament to the fact that the true success of music education is measured not in grades, but in the raw power of collective performance.
The concert opens with 3B. Comprised of three students from three distinct musical backgrounds, they have forged a striking string-based sound. Since forming two years ago, they have become regulars on the Budapest táncház (dance house) scene, and their playing is infused with the kind of unbridled energy that gives such an ensemble its authenticity.
After the interval, Zajedno shifts the tone, turning our focus toward the music of the Balkans. Their name, meaning “together” in Croatian and Serbian, is the very foundation of their music-making. Through Macedonian, Serbian, and Croatian melodies, polyphonic singing, and a diverse array of instruments, they bring the vibrant, driving pulse of the South to the stage.
