The first half of the evening features the works of 20th-century Hungarian composers who found new homes abroad, yet remained deeply rooted in their Hungarian identity. Jenő Takács’s 1931 piece, inspired by Arabic music, transports us to Egypt, where the composer held a teaching post at the time. Sándor Veress’s piano trio, written in Switzerland, evokes the atmosphere of 15th and 16th-century paintings, while early violin duos by Mátyás Seiber and György Ligeti showcase the living tradition of folk music that remained a vital connection for both. We also gain a rare insight into the classical output of world-renowned film composer Miklós Rózsa, with a chamber piece written in the same year as the works by Takács and Seiber.

Following the interval, the ensemble performs a true audience favourite by Johannes Brahms: his Piano Quintet, one of the most popular gems of the chamber repertoire, celebrated for its symphonic scale and virtuoso solo passages. This is an evening where history, personal destiny, and musical tradition converge across borders and beyond.

Pre-concert Talk: At 18:00, László Stachó will give an introductory lecture in Room I on the composers featured in the first half of the programme. Admission is free for concert ticket holders.
