Frida and Diego, Clara and Robert, Izabella and Dénes – inspiring romances and extraordinary legacies. To open the 2026 Kamara.hu Festival, the legendary partnership of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera finds its musical mirror in the works of the Schumanns, performed by the festival’s own husband-and-wife artistic directors.

The evening also explores the complexities of Frida’s other relationships. This is woven into the programme not only through the Andante, originally premiered by Brahms and Clara Schumann, but also through the music of Shostakovich, which evokes the era and atmosphere of Leon Trotsky.

Bridging these worlds is a piano quintet by the American composer Amy Beach, composed in 1907, the very year of Kahlo’s birth. Her music reveals a feminine journey that, while distinct from Frida’s, shares a similar narrative of profound joy shadowed by immense grief. These masterpieces will be brought to life by a distinguished ensemble of international artists, featuring both festival favourites and exciting new debuts.

The artistic directors dedicate this year’s festival to the memory of Imre Földes, the beloved and highly respected professor of the Liszt Academy, who passed away recently.
