One of the most noble representatives of the Hungarian quartet tradition, the Kodály Quartet, celebrates a landmark anniversary this year. The ensemble was founded in 1966 by four students of the Liszt Academy: Ernő Sebestyén, István Párkányi, Gábor Fias, and János Devich. Originally known as the Sebestyén Quartet, the formation adopted the name of Zoltán Kodály in 1972, marking the 90th anniversary of the composer’s birth.
Attila Falvay, the current first violinist, has led the ensemble since 1980; he is joined by György Éder (member since 1998), Ferenc Bangó (since 2015), and Zoltán Tuska (since 2019). Their repertoire places a strong emphasis on Hungarian music alongside the classical canon: their discography of over 70 albums includes world-class recordings of Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert cycles, as well as the works of Kodály, Bartók, and Dohnányi.
For decades, serving as ambassadors of Hungarian string quartet culture, they have toured to great acclaim across nearly every European country, the United States, Japan, China, India, Australia, and New Zealand. Awarded the Bartók–Pásztory Prize in 1996 and the prestigious Kossuth Prize in 2022, the ensemble’s jubilee concert promises to be a true celebration for all lovers of chamber music.
