Trio Felice invites its audience to an elegant salon experience, evoking an era of powdered wigs and lace ruffles. The programme places a special spotlight on the trio sonata, a hallmark of the Baroque era typically performed by two melodic instruments – strings or woodwinds – and a basso continuo. Through this popular genre, which was as suited for grand courts as it was for domestic music-making, the performers take us on a true European musical tour.
The journey features trio sonatas by the Italian-born Locatelli (who traveled as far as Amsterdam), the French master Leclair, the German titan Bach, and the English composer John George Freake. The evening also explores the evocative character pieces of Couperin, known for their picturesque and atmospheric titles, two of which will be performed on the harpsichord.
Rounding out the programme are excerpts from a variation set on the La Folia, an originally lively and dynamic Portuguese dance theme that became a sensation across Europe. This particular interpretation comes from Marin Marais, one of the most significant figures of the French viola da gamba school.
