MÁV Symphony Orchestra

Guest for this concert is an internationally renowned, brilliant conductor coming from America. Leonard Slatkin’s grandparents emigrated from the Ukraine and his parents were also musicians. He completed his studies at the Julliard School, New York, where his teacher was Walter Susskind, famous conductor of the era. He has been music director of several major ensembles in America and Europe, and he has released over 100 CDs. The programme features an American and a Hungarian work plus one of the masterpieces of universal music. The single-movement Elegy by John Corigliano (1938–) debuted in San Francisco in 1966. It is dedicated to Samuel Barber. It is sad, dramatic music of a slow tempo. The Ernő Dohnányi piece dating from 1910 is of a completely different character. It is a bright, entertaining composition rich in ideas yet displaying quality musical methods. The concert concludes with the third ‘Eroica’ symphony by Beethoven.
