Thomas Hengelbrock founded the Balthasar-Neumann-Chor in 1991, and the orchestra four years later (their name derives from the most significant German architect of the Baroque age). Although the repertoire of the chorus runs right up to contemporary music, the principal focus of both ensembles is rooted in 17th and 18th century music. They have taken part in many stage projects, they regularly tour and hold summer academies, and they have cut several albums. Both audiences and the profession consider them one of the most prominent formations of authentic early music performance. They visited the Liszt Academy in spring 2014, bringing two orchestral works and an opera pasticcio compiled from Händel arias. This time they arrive in Budapest armed with a special programme of Baroque rarities and contemporary choral works, in which very different music history periods (the present and the 17th century) are combined by north and south, inasmuch as works by Italian Baroque composers interact with choral pieces by three contemporary Swedish artists: Thomas Jennefelt (1954), Sven-David Sandström (1942) and Ale Möller (1955).
