This concert presents three works, including a third symphony in three flats – that is, E-flat major – by the grand trio of music history. Although the key has a different meaning for Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, these particular works are also related in character. Haydn’s 1788 symphony is followed by Mozart’s exhilarating concerto, with one of the best Hungarian horn-players, László Gál, principle first hornist of the orchestra, playing the solo. In his symphony originally dedicated to Napoleon, Beethoven had given the horn a distinguished role. In terms of dimension, drama and complexity, his Third brought revolutionary change to the genre in its history after Haydn.
