It is often said that music is like a language: a language in which the instruments speak. But what does music say, and how is it capable of relating a story if it is not supported by text? The autumn concerts of the Liszt Academy’s youth series, Liszt Kidz Academy, which is targeted at 10-15-year-olds (as well as their parents and grandparents), seek answers to this question. On this, the fourth in the series, professor of the Liszt Academy Chamber Music Workshop and Junior Prima winner Balázs Fülei reveals how his instrument, the piano, is capable of telling stories, conveying emotions, getting messages across to listeners, frequently far more effectively and profoundly than any written text. Selecting from a repertoire spanning two centuries, he makes the piano sing and from his playing and narration it becomes clear why composers were once called ‘poets of sound’.
