The point is to increase gradually the level of the understanding, cultivation and practice of musical art. This task falls particularly to the new Academy.

Jean-Guihen Queyras (cello), Alexandre Tharaud (piano)

There are very few more excellent and suited pairings in the cello-piano chamber music realm than Jean-Guihen Queyras and Alexandre Tharaud. In the first half of the programme, the musicians, both of whom are world-class in their own right, perform one of Bach’s three sonatas, marvels of the Baroque viol, and two suites by the French master of the instrument Marais. The French theme continues after the intermission before veering towards the Austro–Hungarian Monarchy: compositions by the legendary cello teacher of the Liszt Academy performed by the two French artists, then violinist Fritz Kreisler’s two contemporary ‘hits’, while the last section, preceding, we hope, electrifying encores, is given over to Brahms’s evergreen Hungarian dances, the special feature of which is that the arrangements were made jointly by the two musicians.
