Máté Tomasz (cello), Sebestyén Pellet (piano)
In 2024, we will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the birth of the great French cellist Paul Tortelier. Although he never gave a concert in Hungary, Hungarian Radio has regularly broadcast his recordings, so his name is not unknown to Hungarian music lovers. It is well known that Tortelier’s favourite composer was Johann Sebastian Bach, and this explains how the Viola da Gamba Sonata in G minor was chosen. In addition to his performing career, Tortelier also worked as a composer, writing a number of shorter character pieces for solo cello and cello-piano duet. The concert will include two of his works, and the first part will conclude with Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano, a staple of the cello repertoire. The second part is Rachmaninov’s Sonata in G minor, in which the two instruments play equal roles. Sebestyén Pellet and Máté Tomasz are currently students at the Liszt Academy (the former a master’s student, the latter a doctoral student), and their joint concert promises to be an excellent chamber music experience.
