The two Hungarians not only played music, they were themselves the music – in every nerve – down to their fingertips.

Adelheid von Schorn on Reményi and Liszt

Jenő Jandó and the Korean Liszt Soceity

3 September 2013

Our university’s piano professor is representing the Liszt Academy of Music at the fifth Liszt Piano Competition organized by the Korean Liszt Society.

This is not Professor Jando's first time in South Korea as a representative of the Liszt Academy of Music as he was a guest member of the jury at the National Liszt Piano Competition of the Korean Liszt Society in the Liszt Year of 2011. He also holds several courses related to the competition, introducing pianists of Far Eastern countries to Liszt's music, as well as the Music Academy's traditions and teaching methods. The Liszt Piano Competition in Seoul has been supported by the Liszt Academy of Music since the very beginning: the main prize has traditionally been a one-year piano BA or MA scholarship program at the Music Academy.

Besides doing jury work and holding courses, Professor Jeno Jando also plays concertos in South Korea. His first concert was held on 27th August at the most important Korean music center, the Seoul Arts Center. At his solo piano recital co-organized by the Korean Liszt Society together with the Hungarian Embassy in Seoul and received by a large audience, he performed Franz Liszt pieces such as Funérailles, Valee d'Obermann and Sonata in B minor, as well as the Tannhäuser Overture and the Rigoletto Paraphrase. Following the competition, Professor Jando will also be giving two more concerts, on September 3 in the city of Gwangju and on September 5 in Daegu.

Traditionally, there have always been excellent relations between our Academy and East Asian music institutions and organizations. In May 2013 under the organization of the Hungarian-Korean Society, Professor Hur Young Han held a lecture in the György Ligeti building on one of Zoltan Kodaly's students, Korean composer-conductor-pianist Ahn Eak-tai, and in February 2014 the musicians of the Korean Liszt Society will be performing a two-piano recital at the Concert Hall of the Music Academy, newly reopening in a few weeks.
