Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 is considered to be a landmark in Romanticism, the composer being the first to involve the listener in the struggle of creation. The first three movements of the symphony could even be the most extensive and coherent composition of the composer’s oeuvre; yet, even then, before the finale he decides that he desires even more and even better in the form of a huge recitativo, a style uncommon in the genre of the symphony and which employs a theme that is the symbol of both joy and love. The vocals part in the fourth movement and the other musical thoughts put into words unquestionably made the 9th symphony the unparalleled archetype of the genre.
