The Hungarian National Philharmonic programme sweeps the audience into the magical empire of French music. The chosen works are full of energy, variation, dynamism and virtuosity – and they also provide the ideal backdrop to reveal the scale of the Liszt Academy’s recently restored organ. The Claude Debussy piece awards the leading part to the flute; the instrument is given a particular character by the dream-like prelude and descending melody. The speciality of Poulenc’s work lies in the way the majestic colours of the organ blend into the orchestra’s tone. Finally, the ‘Organ’ symphony was written in tribute to Ferenc Liszt.
