Evgeni Koroliov (piano)
Evgeni Koroliov is a phenomenon of the international music scene, winning over audiences with his extraordinary artistic and interpretive skills free of all kinds of pretension, as well as with his overwhelming spiritual empathy for the interpreted works. His extensive repertoire runs from Bach and the Vienna classics through works by Schubert, Chopin and Debussy right up to the modern classics, Messiaen and Ligeti. He has shown a special affinity for Bach works and has given his interpretations of the very greatest pieces at countless venues, for instance the Salzburg Whitsun Baroque Festival and in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. His CD recording ‘The Art of Fugue’ prompted a memorable reaction from composer György Ligeti: “If I could take with me a single CD to an uninhabited island, it would be Koroliov's Bach recording, because I would listen to it in the midst of starvation and deadly thirst, until my final breath.” His solo recital of Bach’s Goldberg Variations at the Leipzig Festival was recorded for posterity by EuroArts. Recently, record publisher Tacet released a CD of Bach’s piano works and arrangements (Liszt, Kurtág, Koroliov), in which Koroliov plays duets with his wife.
