There is no question that at the age of just 30, Mozart was already in his mature period as a composer. Gábor Takács-Nagy, one of the most experienced exponents of the music of Haydn and Mozart, gives us a glimpse into works he created in spring 1786 in this concert introducing his ensemble, Manchester Camerata. The recital starts with the overture of the one-act singspiel commissioned by Emperor Joseph II. Kossuth and Liszt Prize holder Dénes Várjon is soloist for one of the composer’s most popular piano concertos: the aethereal quality of the two quick extreme movements counterbalances the melancholy of the Adagio. The second half of the concert also gets underway with an overture: The Marriage of Figaro was created a few months after The Impresario and is the first Da Ponte opera. The famous ‘great’ G minor symphony is the odd one out. It is one of the three final major symphonies, which he wrote in two months, in 1788.
