Russian music, which only began to emerge with any definition from the shadow of music life composed in Russia but mostly directed by German and Italian composers from the middle of the 19th century onwards, had by the end of the century become one of the most well-known and popular national styles in Europe with an absolutely inimitable image. This is almost certainly because it was understandable, nostalgic, virtuoso and, in many cases, extremely progressive. The programme of the Ádám Balogh concert calling on significant technical skills and endurance spans (at least in chronological order) all the way from the Tchaikovsky trio reminiscent of Nikolai Rubinstein through Rachmaninov’s youthful, varied and colourful Six moments musicaux all the way to Scriabin’s last, atonal sonata full of trills and tremolos, or to use the composer’s own expression, to the musical image of “insects born from the sun”.
