Yekwon Sunwoo (piano)

Yekwon Sunwoo exploded onto the music scene as winner of one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world: he came out first at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The then 28-year-old South Korean artist proved himself the best from among some 300 competitors from 43 countries, that is, he showed he had something more even within this top echelon of artists. Two of his stylistic traits are his remarkable taste and his passion for discovery, which are clearly reflected in the programme of his debut concert at the Liszt Academy. In the first half, he performs youthful and lesser-known compositions by Richard Strauss, the late Romantic composer mainly renowned for his orchestral works and operas, then the focus switches to the years 1903–1905 through works by composers representing various schools of music Impressionism: Respighi’s almost totally forgotten piano pieces and two of Debussy’s breathtakingly magical masterpieces.
