Abigél Varga’s Embrace oratorio explores the inner development of the human soul and the questions of self-awareness. Drawing heavily from Carl Gustav Jung’s psychological theories, the piece addresses the concept that everyone carries something from the world of the dark side (the Shadow), which is often difficult to accept or process. The work delves into the complex relationship between the Individual and their Shadow, presenting many layers of this connection. The composition consists of ten movements: Cradle – Playground – Temple – Alley – Blossoming – Ritual – Forest – Dream – Outside – Encounters. These movements also represent the stages of an emotional journey. The unfolding narrative moves from childhood to adulthood, illustrating the expansion of the emotional spectrum and how external influences shape the personality. Within the work’s dramaturgy, Projections – allegories of emotional expressions – become true characters: Joy, Humility, and Passion. These allegorical figures are both protectors and playmates, yet at times confront the Shadow as well.
