The string quartet founded by András Keller in 1987 “burst fortissimo into Hungarian musical life”, as one contemporary critic described it. In the same year, another writer noted, “It is no secret that, after the internationally acclaimed Takács Quartet, they are the rightful successors to the famous tradition of Hungarian chamber music”. From their very first concert, the Keller Quartet performed works such as Beethoven’s Great Fugue and Schubert’s Death and the Maiden string quartet in D minor. Bartók’s music has been part of the quartet’s repertoire from the outset, and in 1995, the ensemble recorded all of the composer’s string quartets, which went on to win the German Record Critics’ Award. The third concert of The Hungarian String Quartet Tradition series will conclude with a piano quintet, much like the debut concert nearly four decades ago with a work by Schumann, but this time featuring Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor.
