The members of the jazz supergroup New Fossils come from some of the country’s most distinctive ensembles, including Deep Glaze, Co Lee, Mörk, Mordai, and the Dresch Quartet. At their acoustic concert at the Liszt Academy, the band will perform selections from their first two albums alongside new pieces from their latest release, Ecosphere. The group’s first two records, which blend the signature sound of the renowned ECM label and Scandinavian influences, are characterized by clarity, cinematic textures, and a melodic, groove-driven jazz sensibility that lends itself perfectly to an acoustic setting. Their third album, however, is defined by a raw, cohesive energy and gritty textures that recall the spirit of American jazz in the 1960s and ’70s, complete with earthy dynamics and richly layered, noise-infused effects. In this concert, New Fossils will reconnect with their musical roots, exploring how contemporary urban jazz can remain both natural and deeply intensive and impulsive. The band’s stated mission is to reach well beyond the traditional jazz audience.
