Bartók 141 Presented by Liszt Academy

Béla Bartók’s oeuvre is of epochal significance in the context of both Hungarian and universal music history; the composer’s interest in the peasant music of various peoples and ethnic communities stands as a model today. The CV of composer, pianist and folk music researcher Bartók is linked to the Liszt Academy in several ways. At the urging of Ernő Dohnányi (who was four years Bartók’s senior), whom he met in Bratislava, he did not go to the music academy in Vienna to study, but instead came here: between 1899 and 1903, he studied piano under Liszt student István Thomán and music composition with Hans Koessler. A few years later, in 1907, he appeared at the opening celebrations of the new building of the Liszt Academy as a young teacher and he was a professor in the Liszt Academy piano department until 1934. He gave countless memorable concerts in the Grand Hall and debuted several compositions that have since become classics. This concert by students of the Liszt Academy is a tribute to Béla Bartók on the 141st anniversary of his birth.
