Apollo and Dionysus, idyll and unrestrained celebration: such contrasting pairs might be used to characterize Beethoven’s two symphonies, the Sixth and the Seventh. The former is one of the most beautiful examples of nature-painting music, where we hear bird songs, the babbling of streams, and shepherd’s horns. The latter, often referred to as 'the apotheosis of dance' following an oft-quoted remark by Richard Wagner, was a great success in the imperial city at the time. It features the popular Allegretto, which was even applauded for an encore at its world premiere and is sometimes performed as a standalone piece. On the fourth evening of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra and Gábor Takács-Nagy’s Beethoven series, we will hear works from the composer’s 'Promethean' period.
