Thanks to Mozart and Beethoven, the genre of the piano trio originally dominated by the keyboard instrument became a conversation of three instruments of equal rank. Later on, Schumann and Brahms also created works in the Romantic style along these lines. In their day, the piano trio had a similar status to a string quartet, but later the genre fell out of fashion. However, this does not mean that no significant compositions for this line-up were written in the past 100 years or more; Rihm’s trio is an excellent example of how it is possible to fill a musical form basically associated with the classics and Romanticism with totally new content. Nicola Benedetti, leader of the ensemble appearing in the Liszt Academy, is not only one of the most sought-after soloists of her generation but she is also a dedicated chamber musician who has travelled the world with her trio since 2008.
