In this series, early and late works from the same composer are placed alongside each other. In many cases, the early works are perfect compositions that only differ from the corresponding mature works in that those traits that were later to become synonymous with a given composer had not yet dominated the style. And as regards the late works, there is literature sufficient to fill a library on how the personal experiences of a lifetime are reflected in the music of different composers, how external expectations had increasingly little leverage on the style of their music, with their work instead being directed by the composer’s internal voice, revealing previously unheard perspectives and with their true serenity shining through. This concert, the first of the series, features early and late chamber works by Debussy and Haydn, a few of which are performed in special period arrangements.
