In the minds of some composers, an étude is not merely a mechanical exercise testing the playing of a given instrument, but rather a masterpiece that represents the very highest registers of their art. Chopin’s études, for instance, the first one of which, the opus 10 series, was written when he was still in his teens, regularly feature on concert programmes today. Some composers, Scriabin being one, wrote études throughout their entire careers, while others like Debussy and Ligeti began to show an interest in the genre in the final phases of their oeuvres. The third, unfinished series of Ligeti études won a Grawemeyer Award, one of the most significant honours for contemporary music of our day. The concert features études – in different chamber music arrangements – by Chopin, Scriabin, Debussy and Ligeti, and a work by Schumann originally scored for pedal piano.
